Last week, Wilmer Difo, a veteran who signed with the White Sox in April, had a fantastic week. This week, Jared Walsh, a veteran who signed with the White Sox in May, had a fantastic week, and like Difo lays claim to Knights Player of the Week.
The Knights had a rough stretch, going 1-5 to fall to 10 games worse than .500. However, much of the offense they managed to find came from Walsh, who clubbed three home runs to finish the week with a 1.157 OPS. Walsh, 30, was an All-Star for the Angels in 2021 but has struggled to find his footing in the majors since then. Perhaps a change of scenery could work out nicely for the slugger, who is doing all he can to help the Knights. With the gaps on the MLB roster on the South Side, Walsh could find the additional chance to make an impact at the highest level again.

Well, would you look at that? The Barons went undefeated this week and are now 30-14 with a +70 run differential. Also, the starting rotation did a fantastic job, which seems to be the standard for the 2024 Barons. However, this week’s award goes to Birmingham newcomer Jacob Gonzalez, who posted a .448/.452/.655 slash line. In recent history, Double-A has been a road block for many White Sox prospects, especially hitters entering pitcher-friendly Regions Field. However, early on, Gonzalez has made Double-A pitching look easy to hit. Three weeks ago, Gonzalez won the weekly award for Winston-Salem, and now, at a higher level, he has posted yet another massive week. He’s in fact our first POTW winner at multiple levels, the first to three separate POTW awards, and Gonzalez has accomplished these feats in May! Congratulations to the talented shortstop on taking another stride toward the majors.
Tim Elko and Brooks Baldwin did not finish far behind Gonzalez in terms of hitting stats. In addition, the entire rotation had a strong week. No wonder this team won all of its games.

Left-handed starting pitcher Tyler Schweitzer, 23, has slid under the radar in the weekly awards, but his strong start was enough to earn his first award this season. Schweitzer has been on fire over his past three games, but he was on a different level during his start on Wednesday. If Schweitzer proves that he can sustain a similar level of dominance, he may find himself sliding into the intimidating Birmingham rotation soon.
At the plate, there were a couple of near-misses, as Shawn Goosenberg (.971 OPS during the week) and Samuel Zavala (.968) gave Winston-Salem’s offense a much-needed spark. In addition, Calvin Harris was an on-base machine, drawing seven walks en route to a .273/.556/.545 during the four games he played in.

It was another great week for the Cannon Ballers, who went 5-1, just as they did last week. During their past six games, Kannapolis has outscored its opponents by a score of 52-13, as Augusta had a rough time handling Kanny’s, even while playing at home.
Many Cannon Ballers had weeks to remember, but starter Drew McDaniel became the first Kannapolis pitcher since Aldrin Batista in early April to win the weekly award. On Tuesday, McDaniel collected his second straight scoreless start, a very impressive feat. This time, he struck out 11 without issuing any walks, which tells you just about all you need to know about how that game went. McDaniel’s ERA has shrunk to 1.82, and shortly after his great performance, he earned a promotion to the Dash.
