6. 64DD: Broken Promises - IGN

  • The path to the release of the 64DD is plastered with many broken promises. Nintendo may have originally intended the DD to become a mass-market add-on that would offer things not possible on cartridge or CD, but a lot had changed by the time the drive finally hit shelves. In the end, the 64DD turned into an appealing creativity package that delivered a well-designed user-driven experience -- at a much too high price. On a cost per item basis, the 64DD certainly fares well. After all, you're getting a drive, six games, a mouse, a capture cart, a modem, a microphone and online access. But since the use of each peripheral is limited, the price is still hard to stomach. Although some US publishers expressed interest in creating DD games, Nintendo of America decided early on that the drive wouldn't be released stateside. Chalk it up to Lincoln's and Arakawa's business sense -- or the fact that NCL was targeting the drive squarely at the Japanese consumer, but NOA pulled the plug before anyone could become too excited about the 64DD. In Japan, NCL continued to supply the gaming press with a steady stream of promises and information about the 64DD's features. Below, you will find all of the 64DD's promised virtues -- followed by the facts.
