What Are The Best Chocolate Chips For Making Chocolate Chip Cookies?

In my opinion, the best chocolate chips for making classic chocolate chip cookies is Nestle Toll House Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips.

For these easy chocolate chip cookies, I love to use half regular size and half of these mini semi sweet chocolate chips.

Using a combination of both regular and mini adds in more chocolate flavor and makes them extra ooey gooey and delicious!

My #1 Tip for Making These Self-Rising Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

I’ve now been making these amazing chocolate chip cookies for YEARS and while the recipe hasn’t changed, I’ve discovered over time the best way to ensure these cookies turn out perfectly delicious, soft, and ooey gooey is to CHILL THE DOUGH before baking.

In my early years of cookie baking I’d just make the cookie dough and immediately throw them in the oven, but I’ve since learned that doing that does a serious disservice if you want soft, chewy, ooey gooey cookies with the best flavor possible.

Sure, they’ll still taste delicious, but baking your cookies immediately will cause the cookies to spread out further on the pan and will result in a flatter, crispier, more dry cookie.

Why Is It Important to Chill Cookie Dough?

A. Not to get super scientific on you, but chilling your cookie dough solidifies the fat in your cookies and is what ensures your cookies will maintain their shape. It also ensures they’ll have a soft & chewy texture when baked.

B. It really enhances all the delicious flavors in your cookies, making them even more irresistible.

How Long Should You Chill Your Cookie Dough?

To ensure these chocolate chip cookies keep their fluffy shape and pillow soft texture, chill your dough for a minimum of 1-2 hours or up to 48 hours before baking.

My personal preference is making my dough the night before and refrigerating overnight to bake the next day, and they always turn out amazing!

Chilling your cookie dough will also make it a lot easier to scoop or roll out your cookie dough balls and the flavors really intensify the longer you refrigerate your dough.

Can I Freeze My Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough?

Yes! In fact, I do this all the time when I only want to make a half batch for me and my boys.

Simply prepare your cookie dough as directed, chill for at least 1 hour, then roll into individual balls and place on a tray to freeze for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Then transfer your cookie dough balls into a freezer safe bag or container and freeze for up to 3 months.

Once ready to bake, pop them onto your cookie sheet and bake as directed.

Instructions

  1. Using an electric hand mixer, cream butter in a large mixing bowl until smooth.
  2. Next, add in sugar and brown sugar and mix with electric mixer for about 1 minute, until creamy. Add egg and vanilla extract and mix for about 30 seconds until incorporated.
  3. Slowly add in flour 1/2 cup at a time and mix until just combined.
  4. Next, add in your chocolate chips and gently stir by hand until evenly incorporated. (I like using half regular size chocolate chips and half mini size to make them extra yummy!)
  5. Cover and place your chocolate chip cookie dough in the refrigerator to chill for a minimum of 1 hour or overnight is preferred.*
  6. Once dough has chilled, remove from the fridge, preheat oven to 375 degrees F, and use a small cookie scoop or hands to shape into balls.
  7. Line large cookie sheets with parchment paper and place cookie dough balls about 2 inches spaced apart on your cookie sheet.
  8. Place in a 375 degree preheated oven and bake for 8-11 minutes until the sides and bottom are a light golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  10. Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Notes

Butter – Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature but not overly soft or melted. I usually set mine out a couple hours before I want to make my cookies. I personally use unsalted butter for these cookies but you can use salted if you prefer.

How Long to Chill Dough – I recommend chilling your cookie dough for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator prior to baking. This helps ensure your cookies won’t spread out too thin and will help achieve a more soft, chewy texture. I personally like making my cookie dough the night before and refrigerating overnight, and you can even chill your dough up to 48 hours.

How to Store Cookies – Store leftover chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

How to Freeze Dough – Cookie dough can be frozen for up to 3 months. I recommend shaping into balls and placing in a freezer safe bag that way you can easily bake them from frozen. Bake as directed.

I can remember countless times being in the kitchen with my two brothers and my Mom, making a huge batch of her easy chocolate chip cookies, and it was always so much fun to help mix up the batter, carefully scoop out the cookie dough on the pans, and wait anxiously until the timer went off and they were cool enough to eat.

There’s seriously nothing better than eatingwarm cookies with a cold glass of milk, and enjoying it with the people you love the most.
