Happy Joe's is where the taco pizza was born. Joe Whitty was the founder of Happy Joe's Pizza. The Monticello location was just one of many across Eastern Iowa. It turns out that Happy Joe created the taco pizza the same year that I was born!

The Original Joe's Story

It was opened by a Croatian immigrant, Tony Rodin, who had witnessed hunger, war and adversity—a man who landed here in search of the American Dream and the promise to provide something great for those who had the will to seize it.

The first Original Joe's was established by a Croatian immigrant, Ante "Tony" Rodin in 1937. The restaurant was originally located at 144 Taylor Street in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood, and initially consisted of a 14-stool counter on a saw-dust covered floor.

Now the chain has more than 65 locations in Michigan, Nevada, California and Ohio. The pizzerias are known for their granite counter tops, Venetian plaster on their walls and the neon signs in and outside of the building.

Today, Not Your Average Joe's boast 25 locations from Nashua, NH to Woodbridge, VA, satisfying a seemingly limitless hunger for creative casual cuisine.

FARGO — Happy Joe's is returning to Fargo. That's according to Kat Davidson, vice president for franchise development for Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream Parlors. "We welcome all of our guests back," Davidson told The Forum on Monday, adding that the new store will be operated by a franchisee.
